For 40 years, Magic has provided Toronto and the GTA with some of the most advanced residential windows in the world. Our innovative replacement windows, patio doors and Window Walls can add style and performance to any home. Welcome to our blog, where we provide consumers with the information and inspiration they need to make informed decisions about replacing crank windows in Toronto.

Crank windows should be a thing of the past.

A very common feature of North American residential casement window design, the crank mechanism is nevertheless an outdated, mechanically-flawed piece of window hardware. And while it’s common for older windows to show their age both aesthetically and functionally, there are few window components that are more prone to issues than the crank. The good news? These issues are entirely preventable by embracing a new type of hardware system.

For over 40 years, Magic has been committed to designing better, smarter replacement windows that homeowners can take pride in and rely on year after year. Nothing embodies this spirit of re-invention and innovation more than our Parallex hardware system. In its complete negation of window crank hardware, the ParallexTM system completely revolutionizes the way homeowners interact with their windows.

Uneven Weight Distribution & Motion:

Crank windows work by opening the window sash from the bottom. This causes two problems. First, the thin arm of the crank system has to hold the weight of the entire window sash. This issue of weight is even more pronounced with triple-glazed windows, which are used commonly in residential window applications. More weight means more continuous strain on the crank system. Second, the top of the sash and the bottom do not move in tandem; instead, the top of the sash reacts to the movement at the bottom.

Over time, the force of gravity causes the sash to warp, sag and bow within the frame.

Wear and Tear

Crank mechanisms have a propensity to strip, break and loosen over time. They also face seasonal-specific issues such as frozen gears and hinges as well as rust.

Parallex Hardware leads to better casement windows

In order to get around the problems that commonly arise with crank mechanisms, we sought to re-think the casement window altogether. We created Parallex hardware, an award-winning system that eliminates crank windows, easing operation and improving durability and functionality.

How does it work?

With Parallex hardware, a large galvanized steel rod runs through the internal part of the sash, connecting to two extremely durable nylon/brass shoes. These shoes then sit in tracks that run along the top and bottom sections of the window frame.

By securely fastening the sash to these parallel tracks, Parallex technology forces the top and bottom of the sash to move in complete tandem; the bottom shoe cannot move without the top shoe actively moving along with it. This equal distribution of torque and movement is what allows our casement windows to operate without any risk of warping, sagging or distortion.

Eliminates Sash Sag

Sash sag commonly occurs when the unsupported lock side of a casement sash begins to droop relative to the window’s frame. Without the need for cranks or hinges of any kind, sash sag is a non-factor on casement windows with Parallex® technology.

Better views, Tighter Seals, Wider Openings.

Without relying on a crank that will deteriorate and loosen over time, the Parallex system creates consistently tighter seals. It also leads to a wider opening for better views, improved ventilation and a much more accessible route of escape in case of emergency.

Easier Cleaning

The Parallex system tilts/rotates the sash inward. This makes for easy, safe cleaning from inside the home.
