It’s a common misconception that home renovation projects are always better left for the warmer seasons. Winter’s freezing temperatures and snowy, wet conditions, along with the shorter days, are some of the most common excuses to postpone renovations and repairs. With over 40 years of experience in manufacturing and installing premium windows, we can confidently tell you that you shouldn’t fear replacing your windows this winter. Not only can you install windows in the winter, but you absolutely should. Not convinced? Bear with us.

Is Winter Really the Best Time to Replace Windows?

Assuming you’ve chosen a reputable company to perform the installation… then yes! The time of year shouldn’t affect an experienced window installer’s ability to replace your windows—even in the dead of winter.

Won’t my house get cold during installation?

A common concern with winter window installations is that you will have to find somewhere else to stay during the process due to cold air entering your home. If done properly, you can install windows in the winter with little to no impact on those living inside the house. Here at Magic Windows, our thorough and meticulous technicians will:

  • Isolate the room by closing the doors, preventing unnecessary loss of heat.
  • Potentially erect plastic floor-to-ceiling walls that will prevent outside air from roaming through the house.
  • Install only one window at a time to further prevent avoidable cold air intrusion.
  • Have one technician working from inside, and one from outside, reducing the need to constantly open and close your door.
  • Use cloths and towels to avoid excessive mess or wet spots around the house (we promise to leave your house just as clean as we found it).

Won’t my windows expand once it gets warmer?

At Magic Windows, we use a hybrid window frame made from a vinyl shell with an aluminum skeleton. This takes the benefits of the popular vinyl window frame while eliminating its common issue of seasonal expansion and contraction by supporting it with a skeleton of stainless steel and anodized aluminum. This custom formulation of window frame removes any risk of your windows expanding and compromising the air tightness of your new windows in the warmer months.

The Benefits of Installing New Windows This Winter

Here are some more reasons why you might want to consider installing new windows in the winter:

Lower demand = higher availability

A process such as a window replacement can sometimes be difficult to coordinate—especially if you and your household are often busy during work hours. This is one major benefit to getting windows installed in the winter. The myths around winter window installations leave premium window companies like Magic with fewer installation opportunities, making it much easier to schedule us for an installation on your schedule.

*It’s also important to note that the window replacement process is generally much quicker than expected. Replacing a handful of windows should take no longer than an afternoon!*

Bad windows can’t hide in the winter

It’s much harder to identify a faulty window in the warmer months, but in the winter, they tend to stick out like a sore thumb. One telltale sign that it’s time to replace your windows is frost—or any form of condensation—forming on the inside of the windows.  Another sign that is far too often overlooked is cold drafts near the window. If cold air is getting in through your windows, that means your window is not performing properly. Not only will it leave your household chilly, it will also hike up your monthly energy bill.

Stay warm for the rest of the season

If you have only just now noticed that your windows need replacing (or you’ve known it for a while and have been putting it off), there is absolutely no benefit to waiting until the summer. The only thing that you will achieve is another couple months of raised energy bills, cold air in your house, and frost on your windows. Look into some of the energy efficient window options made to protect against Canadian winters, and consider what it would be like to have efficient and stylish windows to carry you through to the summer.
